Written by Lauren Page | @LiveWithLP James Johnston is over from Australia bringing his country flare to the UK There’s something slightly different about interviewing an artist after you’ve watched them tear a stage apart. Usually, I’m backstage before the show, chatting about what’s about to happen. This time, I’d already watched James Johnston walk out in front of a packed SWG3 crowd, bring a bagpiper onto the stage and somehow turn a Glasgow gig into what felt like a country nightclub. So when I caught up with him afterwards, he was still trying to process it himself. “That was amazing, I can’t believe that,” he tells me. “I can’t believe I’m here in Scotland, I’m in Glasgow, and we just played that show. That was surreal.” Surreal is probably the right word. Johnston’s first Glasgow headline show had already been upgraded due to demand, and by the time he hit the stage, the room was jam-packed. At the back, Maggie’s Line Dancers were somehow still finding enough space to throw themselves into routines amongst a crowd that was very much not designed to accommodate line dancing, but it was welcomed with open arms. “They try and make their own space,” Johnston laughs. “It was jam-packed, but they still managed to find a little bit of room.” The biggest Scottish moment of the night, though, came when Johnston performed his brand-new track Country Song, released just days before the show, complete with live bagpipes. “I’ve wanted to do that for a long time,” he explains. “Before I’d even thought about coming to Scotland, before I put this show on, I had that song. It’s been around for a little while. “I knew when I was coming here, this is the time to release it. It was pretty cool to walk out there and have bagpipes in Scotland playing the new song.” And because apparently Australia follows Johnston wherever he goes, the bagpiper in question turned out to be a fellow Aussie. “I found probably the only Australian bagpiper in all of Scotland,” he laughs. You genuinely couldn’t write it. But Johnston’s connection to Scotland actually runs much deeper than a conveniently Australian bagpipe player. His grandfather is Scottish, with family connections to Fife, and back home the Johnston tartan has always been part of the family. “My grandfather’s a proud Scot,” he tells me. “At his house, we even had the Johnston tartan. He’s 96 now and he’s very proud.” His grandfather had originally hoped to make the trip to see the show but wasn’t quite up to travelling. Instead, Johnston has been sharing the Scottish adventure with him from afar - making an already special first headline show here mean that little bit more. And judging by the response Johnston is getting on this side of the world, it certainly won’t be his last. With his Glasgow show packed out and Country Calling still to come, UK country fans have very quickly taken the Australian singer under their wing. “The UK, I love you,” he says. “It’s crazy.” “I still kind of pinch myself because I grew up in Australia. The idea that, as an Australian in country music, I can come over and play shows in the UK and people are loving country - it’s pretty wild. “I didn’t even know if that was a thing that would have existed five years ago. Now people are showing up in droves and it’s pretty special.” Before letting him escape to meet fans at the merch table, there was one final piece of important Scottish business to take care of. After meeting the Maggie’s Line Dancers during the show, we presented Johnston with a Maggie’s Rock ’n’ Rodeo hat and T-shirt - complete, naturally, with Highland cows. It turns out we accidentally found the perfect gift. “One of the things that my wife is most excited about coming to Scotland for is Highland cows,” he tells me. “She is obsessed with Highland cows. To a point where it’s a bit dangerous because of how much she wants one.” There is, unfortunately, one fairly major obstacle to Johnston adding one to the family farm. “Where we live, it’s about 40 degrees in the summer, and I don’t think Highland cows are designed to be in 40-degree temperatures,” he laughs. “Otherwise, we would buy a Highland cow for our farm.” For now, the T-shirt might have to do. Although Johnston reckons his wife may steal it before he even gets home... From bagpipes and family ties to line dancing and Highland cows, Johnston’s first Glasgow headline show couldn’t really have been more Scottish if he tried. The good news? When I tell him I hope this is the first of many trips north of the border, there’s no hesitation. “Absolutely. I’ll be coming back soon.” You heard him. It’s happening. All issues of following your heart and trusting your gut instinct. As he attests, he would love for the album to provide the comfort that his own favourite records have given him in the past. And his influences are prevalent through the record, touching on Sam Cooke, BB King and Van Morrison. But its punchy, dynamic production roots in the present day, too. Whether he's bringing big beat to the '60s R&B of 'Sweeter', exploring dub soul on 'Easy To Me', or merging pop and gospel with 'At The Higher Ground', Samuel's voice is phenomenal. He adds, "I feel like I've really come home with this record. It's a collection of songs heavily inspired by my time and experiences writing in America and it's unapologetically me. When I look back over the music I've written I think I've been pretty adventurous, I've never really stayed in one lane and I like that I've been eclectic and explored the craft of writing across different genres. But this new record feels like the one I was always supposed to write, it's a soul record at heart and there's no question in mind that I've never felt so authentically myself." Samuel Jack made the entire record with his long-term writing and production collaborators Owen Thomas and Lily-May Young. Samuel Jack's story started twenty years ago. Working in a pub, he decided one night to try singing at the piano with his best friend. At the time he didn't stand-out, but that moment unlocked something within him. He vowed to improve and step-by-step that's what he achieved. He's still at it today. He continued to grind, often writing in a rain-soaked caravan in England that's about as far away from the decadent glamour of Los Angeles as you can imagine. And with a series of independent releases, people gradually started to pay attention. The turning point came in lockdown when 'Feels Like Summer' took off - and it never went away, resurfacing each summer and soundtracking 2 million fan-created videos across socials. A major new international festival celebrating Wales's rich musical heritage today unveils its first headline artist, with world-renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli set to perform his first ever headline concert in Wales at Cardiff's Principality Stadium on Saturday 8 May 2027. [London, 7th August 2026] This autumn an AI-driven, immersive, interactive new courtroom drama will see humanity stand trial as Lightroom London presents GAWD v. The People. The show, GAWD, created by nilor, has the audience as witnesses and advocates as the live Judge GAWD, played by an AI agent, investigates whether humans deserve to stay on the planet and get another chance. Each performance is unscripted, with multiple active AI characters and no two shows are the same. The Lightroom presentation of GAWD V. Three audience members get the chance to testify for the fate of humanity to the AI judge by taking the stand and three agentic AI witness characters will testify against humanity - this is all 'training' the AI model and influencing the action - and the final judgement. In a distinctive approach to a major international and cultural bid, the London WorldPride 2032 Bid Committee is inviting artists, designers, photographers and Pride communities from around the world to help shape what could become the official visual identity of WorldPride 2032. Announced today at a special reception during WorldPride Amsterdam at the British Council, the initiative marks the first major public engagement campaign for London's bid and places community participation and creative democracy at the heart of the city's ambition to host one of the world's most significant LGBTQIA+ events. Alison Moyet's 2024 career-spanning reworks album 'Key' earned critical adoration and saw her recent return to the Top 10 album chart. Cooking Vinyl are now re-releasing a limited edition, five-album reissue series of 'Hometime', 'Voice', 'The Turn', 'the minutes' and'Other' on heavyweight colour vinyl and deluxe CD formats. The albums will all be released on September 25th and are available to pre-order HERE. These five records all emerged from a defining era of creativity for Alison. 'Hometime' (2002), largely co-written with long-time collaborator Pete Glenister and produced by The Insects, represented a remarkable comeback. It was seen to be one of the most acclaimed moments of her career and the album achieved Gold certification and a BRIT Award nomination. On 'Voice' (2004) she made a radical diversion and recorded an eclectic selection of songs by other composers accompanied by a classical orchestra. The album was arranged and produced by Academy Award winner Anne Dudley, leading to another Gold certification and a Top 10 chart position. Poppy and dark, simple and soaringly orchestrated, 'The Turn' (2007), co-written and produced by Pete Glenister, inspired the BBC to hail Alison as "one of the most emotive and intoxicating British voices ever,". 'the minutes' (2013) achieved a spectacular return to the synth-pop world alongside writer/producer Guy Sigsworth, and a #5 album chart peak. That style and resurgence continued into 'Other' (2017) with another Guy Sigsworth collaboration, demonstrating intelligent, adventurous electronic pop. The five albums will be released on limited edition heavyweight vinyl, each with its own distinct colour: clear smoke and grey for 'Hometime'; white marble for 'Voice'; yellow and black smoke for 'The Turn'; turquoise marble for 'the minutes'; and red and smoke for 'Other'. Each vinyl features the original album tracklisting. The limited edition two CD formats are all boosted by an array of additional content. Recorded with The Coral's James Skelly at Kempston Studios in Liverpool, 'Love Was Made Of Stone' is a soul filled tale of someone breaking from a relationship built on an illusion. "The song is about years of what was thought to be real love, but something that turns into manipulation and game playing," Brooke says of the track. "Almost like that toxic love we're all aware exists, that you know is no good for you, but you keep holding on with the hope something may change, but it never does." Brooke's knack for turning stories of heartache into soulful, dance floor fillers is once again setting her apart as one of the UK's fastest rising and essential artists. Alongside the announcement the band has released the album's latest cut, 'Thief'. Written over six years between itinerant stays in Nashville, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Michigan, and London, The Precariat takes its name from the economic term describing a growing class of people living with increasing instability and uncertainty. Throughout the album, Tommy Lefroy's Wynter Bethel and Tessa Mouzourakis weave together literary, artistic, and musical influences – from Virginia Woolf, tradwives and suffragettes, to Springsteen's paradoxical patriotism – balancing sharp cultural observation with warmth and emotional honesty, ultimately offering connection as the antidote to uncertainty. Co-produced by the band alongside Stephen Sesso, with executive production from Mike Crossey (The 1975, Arctic Monkeys, MUNA), the album offers an unflinching capture of the uncertainty and anxiety permeating our collective psyche, along with the universality of precarity, despite its tendency to isolate. Tommy Lefroy has also shared new single, 'Thief' alongside an official music video directed by Emmy-nominated artist and photographer Brendon Burton. 'Thief' serves as one of the album's emotional centrepieces. One of the first songs Bethel and Mouzourakis wrote together nearly seven years ago, it reflects on the visceral toll of grief and coming to terms with time spent on a lost cause. The accompanying music video, directed by Brendon Burton, finds the band in vignettes of abandoned spaces across the North American plains. Houses reclaimed by mold and moss, decaying ephemera, and relics of obsolete technology frame the band as they sing "I just wanna feel / shiny and new." "The title refers to things lost along the way, how they sometimes feel taken, by time, or by people who've left us. The chorus came to Wynter in a parking lot, while driving for Postmates in Nashville. The song always felt special to us, like a thesis of how we felt in our early twenties," says the band. "We held on to this song for years knowing we wanted it to be on our first album, and the feelings the song expresses, of perpetual strife and inadequacy, felt more relevant than ever in the context of The Precariat." Tommy Lefroy (named after Thomas Langlois Lefroy, Jane Austen's alleged inspiration for Mr. Darcy), first previewed the album with 'Slush Puppy,' a sharp-edged, satirical summer anthem that pairs euphoric guitars with existential dread.
