She’s the country name on everyone's lips, the Yeehaw Meemaw has finally crossed the pond to visit Europe, and LiveWithLP caught up with the Whipped hit-maker in Glasgow to find out just how she is handling all of this stardom, and yet still being so effortlessly herself.
Emily Ann Roberts, I am obsessed with you, and it is such a blessing to meet you in person.
Oh, you are too sweet! It is lovely to meet you too!
We simply adore you here in Europe, everything from the content you put online to your voice. I caught you in London earlier this month, pre-C2C, and I was blown away by your voice.
May I say.. Keith Freaking Urban! I shared the stage at that show with Keith Urban! What is my life, that was amazing, oh my gosh, just so incredible.
It was certainly a night to remember, and I think especially even looking at just the last six months, things have been so crazy for you. Are you still on this roller coaster, or has it kind of settled in that.. You are a STAR
Well, I don’t know if I’ve landed at I’m a star, but maybe I’m getting closer and closer each day! I am thousands of miles away from my hometown, the place that raised me and the people that know me best, and folks are singing along to my songs, which makes me feel like I'm doing this properly and my music is resonating with people. It's hard for you to really feel like you're making progress when you’re sowing the weeds of it, you know, but looking around the crowds during C2C, I really feel like we have made a lot of progress.
Everything you do, even the wonderful crocheting content you made with the Girls in Low Places podcast, was brilliant.
We have even had girls in crochet outfits here in Glasgow, it’s so precious!
We’re hooked! I must admit, back in December, we had Drew Baldridge over here, and as I was chatting to him, I asked the question that I ask everyone - “who is the next star?” and his exact words were - that he was having Lainey Wilson, and they discussed the same thing, and both agreed - it’s Emily Ann Roberts.
WHAT?! Okay.. well I’m glad I finally heard that news! Should he have texted me? Oh my gosh.. Lainey Wilson knows who I am?! She talks about me at supper?! That is WILD! Well, I love Drew very much, we got to do a duet together - Get Me Gone - and I was so honoured that he asked me to be a part of that song, but that means a lot - that’s really, really cool.
Your music is an absolute dream, and the one I cannot shake at the moment. I am hooked, it's whipped. The internet and I just eat it up!
Well, people are saying Gwen Stefani taught us how to spell B-A-N-A-N-A-S, and I’m teaching folks how to spell W-H-I-P-P-E-D -so I’m honoured to be a part of the movement.
It’s all go for you! First time over here in Europe, too?
Yes, first time! Oh my gosh, I love it - I hear there is a bit of a feud between the Scottish and the English, but I love everybody and everyone has been so kind to me, and all the fans have been so wonderful. Everything here is so beautiful and historic, I genuinely think it’s only a matter of time before we come back.
Emily Ann, I will hand on heart tell you, I am expecting you to be on that main stage next year!
Really? Well, that’s from your lips to God's ears!
We are BLESSED to have you here, and it’s such an exciting time to be a woman in country music at the moment. Your good friend, Ella, is out here setting records and breaking boundaries that we love to see! How is it being a female artist in this era?
Oh I am so thrilled to be apart of this current country scene, everybody is so unique and their music is so inspiring - when I first got started 10 years ago, I felt like I had to be in a certain box to be successful and thanks to folks like Ella and Lainey and the women who have well and truly come before me, they have stuck true to who they are and have blazed a trail for me to be able to be myself and I am really grateful that I get to walk in their footsteps and hopefully I make them proud because I sure am proud to be even mentioned along those names.
We’re loving every second! Since being over here and exploring Europe, are there any traits or song ideas you’re going to take back to the States with you?
We have been writing a bit with the band. We had one day with a bit of free time - it’s been very go-go-go since we got here, but during our free time, we worked on a little chorus, which was fun, but as soon as I’m back in America, it's full-blown tour mode and recording. I’ve been writing like crazy in January and February, so I have lots of new music to record. I’m heading back home with a lot of confidence, y’all have made me feel right at home!
I struggle to find my voice in this genre, but I’m heading back to the States with my head a little bit higher for sure.
C2C is such a great festival for bringing a range of country artists together - Ty Myers, more bluesy, Drake Milligan, more rocky bluesy - but is there anyone who is on the lineup that you can’t believe you’re on tour with?
Honey, everybody I mean stinkin’ Zach Top is playing tonight I am such a fan of him and lI was on stage with Keith Urban let’s just go back to that for a minute all of this has been mind blowing and it just goes to show that if you put your head down and work hard and believe in yourself, you don’t have to take no for an answer - eventually those doors will open up. It's taken me 10 years to get to where I am today, but at the same time, I feel like I’m just getting started. I hope folks are encouraged when they hear my story, and it goes to show that if I can do it, anyone can reach for their dreams, too. Nothing is too big.
The industry is a tough place to cut your teeth, but is there anybody on your radar that you’re listening to that we should be - or anyone you want to give a shoutout to?
There is an incredible artist and songwriter called Wyatt McCubbin and he wrote That’s Texas for Cody Johnson and he’s written a ton of Zach Top songs that you know and love, but Wyatt has a song called You Love and You Learn and it is absolutely beautiful I cannot stop listening to it, but I don’t feel like people are talking about him enough.
He’s getting added to my playlist as soon as possible. Emily Ann, you are the sweetest soul, and I cannot wait to see what happens next for you. You’ve made me want to start canning fruit and crocheting.
I’m here for it, she’s gonna be a MeeMaw Y’all!
Emily Ann Roberts is back in the UK in October/November with Cody Johnson and Parker McCollom.
